Lauren McKinney, from the Binghamton, New York area recently wrote a letter published in her local online newspaper. In the letter, titled “Buy Local, Buy American Must Be the New Battle Cry,” McKinney challenges each of us as Americans to support American business and buy made in the U.S.A. or the next job that is lost may be yours.
“The time has come for Americans to realize that for most, our standard of living is in decline and the more we pour our dollars into imported goods, the more our dollars bolster other countries’ economies, the more jobs are available there, not here,” says McKinney. “If we have to pay ever higher prices for the essentials of our lives, would it not be better to do with a bit less knowing that the full benefit is staying in the US, or would we prefer to spend more for those same items supporting other economies and suffer the tax increases required to support unemployed workers who are unable to gain employment because their jobs have gone out of country?”

I think McKinney is absolutely right. Our standard of living in this country is on a rapid decline, and if we don’t take responsibility for our buying behavior that contributes so much to the problem our nation is facing, our country may never be the same. Our wealth will simply dry up, and we will cease to be the great nation that generations before us have built.
I don’t want that to be our future. I know we can right our ship, but people have to understand that buying American is the answer. It may be the only answer. I think the day will come that everyone will realize that our extreme overreliance on imports was the problem from which so many other problems stemmed. For the sake of future generations, my hope is that we realize it before it is too late to do anything about it.
Until next time, here’s to doing what we can to support our country by buying American.
